今日はシャーリー・エリスでザ・ニッティ・グリッティです。

リンカーン・チェイス作曲です。1963年のシングルで、全米8位を記録しました。

シャーリー・エリスこと、シャーリー・マリー・オガラ(Shirley Marie O’Garra)は、1929年1月19日、ニューヨーク・ブロンクス生まれの歌手です。ノヴェルティ・ソングの女王として知られており、いくつかのヒット曲が有ります。

メトロノームズというグループのメンバーとして活動した後、1963年に今回の「ザ・ニッティ・グリッティ」、1964年に「ザ・ネーム・ゲーム」、1965年に「ザ・クラッピング・ソング」をヒットさせました。1968年に引退します。

2005年10月5日に、76歳で亡くなりました。

ニッティ・グリッティというダンスの歌です。

余談ですが、ニッティ・グリッティという言葉には「物事の核心をつく」という意味があります。そういう意味でも、「無駄を省いてこのダンスを覚えなさい」という、布教ソングなのかもしれませんね。笑

Shirleyは明るい森、MarieはMariaが転じて愛しい人、という意味ですね。

O’Garra

①アイルランド語のO’Gadhra(オーガドラ)の英語化。猟犬またはマスチフを意味するgadhar(ガダール)に由来する。

②ゲール語名「Ó Gairbh」に由来し、「粗野」または「厳しい」という意味があり、風景や土地、天候を表す事ができる。

という事で、O’Garraという苗字のこの方の祖先は、「厳しい土地で強く育った」のかもしれません。

全て揃いました。この方の名前には、「厳しい土地の中の、澄んだ森のような愛のある子に育って欲しい」という願いが込められているのかもしれません。
