前回はイギリスのピアノマンのヒット曲、今回はアメリカのピアノマンの出世曲です。

アルバム『コールド・スプリング・ハーバー』が散々なプロデュースをされて鬱にまでなっていたビリーは、もう一度売れるべくバーでピアニスト兼シンガーとして活動します。その時の実体験がこの曲らしいです。

発売当初はビルボード25位ですが、後に発売する『ストレンジャー』が大ヒットするとこの曲も注目され、今や代名詞といっても過言ではない位の知名度を誇っています。

この時期、ビリーも前回のアルバムからのダメージが若干残っていたと思われますが、そこへ酒場での拍手喝采、ピアニスト冥利に尽きるという感じです。
