サム・クック、チャールズ・クック・ジュニア作曲です。1960年のシングルで、ホット100、R&Bチャートで2位を記録しました。作者のチャールズ・クック・ジュニアはサム・クックの兄弟です。父親が同じ名前なのでジュニアがつきます。

チェイン・ギャングとは、鎖に繋がれた囚人の事で、主に肉体労働をさせられていました。今回の歌は、その囚人の辛さを歌っています。
