Leadbelly - Where did you sleep last night

早速、Murder Song特集第5回目に参りましょう。

今日の洋楽

第5回目は、レッドベリーでホエア・ディド・ユー・スリープ・ラスト・ナイトです。

伝承曲です。アパラチア山脈辺りで、1870年代にできたと言われています。

最初にレコードが出たのは、1926年のドック・ウォルシュです。それ以降はビル・モンロー、ザ・フォー・ペニーズ、先日紹介したルービン・ブラザーズや、早死にしたカート・コバーンが在籍していたニルヴァーナもカバーしています。

レッドベリーのバージョンは1944年と1948年に録音しています。今回紹介したのはどちらなのかは分からないです。

ここから1マイル先のところで、

そいつの首が列車の車輪から見つかったが、

こんな感じです。

奥さんの不倫相手の男を、松の林の中で震えながら待って、現れたところでその男の首を刎ねた、という殺人の歌です。

Her husband〜の所から殺人の歌だって分かりますね。
