今日の洋楽

今日はジョニー・キャッシュでザ・ワン・オン・ザ・ライトという歌です。

ジャック・クレメント作曲です。1966年のシングルで、ホット100で46位、カントリーチャートで2位を記録しました。

1950年代に人気を博したピート・シーガー率いるザ・ウィーバーズを発端とする、一連のフォークソング・リヴァイヴァルの最中に書かれています。

音楽の才能がありながら、政治的思想の食い違いや、ファンの闘争をきっかけに落ち目になったという顛末から、「政治と音楽を一緒にするな」というアドバイスが込められています。

特に、「後ろにいた人=ベーシスト?」の人は、運転免許を燃やし、メンバーの骨折を目の当たりにした後、軍隊に入るという数奇な運命を辿っています。そのぐらいの事を経験するかもしれない、と歌われています。

This musical aggregation toured the entire nation

Singing the traditional ballads 

And the folk songs of our land

They performed with great virtuosity 

And soon they were the rage

But political animosity prevailed upon the stage

But they took their politics seriously

Now this should be a lesson if you plan to start a folk group

Don't go mixin' politics with the folk songs of our land

Just work on harmony and diction 

Play your banjo well

And if you have political convictions keep them to yourself

教える事がある、フォークグループを結成するなら、

俺達の国のフォークソングと政治の思想を混ぜない事だ。

ハーモニーや発声法を研究して、

バンジョーも上手くなる事だ。

政治について思う事があれば、自分の中に留めておく事だ。
