今日の洋楽

今日はボブ・ディランで「ハッティ・キャロルの寂しい死」です。

ボブ・ディラン作曲です。1964年のアルバム『時代は変わる』収録曲です。

実際の事件を元にしたプロテスト・ソングです。プロテスト・ソングとは、政治や貧困、戦争などに対して抗議のメッセージを込めた歌の事です。

1963年にメリーランド州のボルティモアのホテルで、当時24歳の若者、ウィリアム・ザンジンガーが、そこのホテルの裏方のメイドのハッティ・キャロルを杖で殴りつけ死亡させた、という事件がありました。

ウィリアムの暴行を見ていた多数の男女はそれを止める事をしませんでした。それは、ウィリアムが白人、ハッティが黒人だったからです。

ハッティが皿を下げようとテーブルに来た所、ウィリアムの頼んだ飲み物が出てくるのが遅いという理由で、杖が3つになるほど強く殴りつけたそうです。

直ちに逮捕されましたが、ウィリアムの父はメリーランド州の有力者で、あらゆるコネを使い、息子を釈放させます。

第一級殺人の罪で裁判が行われますが、その判決は6ヶ月の禁固刑でした。人を殺して6ヶ月ですよ。Wikipediaで調べたら、大体死刑になるか、5年以上の懲役が課されるそうです。

そしてウィリアムは所有していたタバコ畑が収穫の時期で忙しいと裁判所に申し立て、その刑は取り下げられたそうです。

ボブ・ディランはそうした事件を元に、たった1日の内にこの歌を書き上げ、録音しました。この歌はそんな社会のシステムや、暴行が加えられているのに止めようとしなかった人々に対して「こんなのおかしい」と怒りを込めた歌になっています。

この歌以外にもプロテストソングは何曲かあり、ボブ・ディランはいつしか「プロテスト・ソングの貴公子」と呼ばれる事になりますが、後にケネディ大統領が暗殺されるのをキッカケにプロテスト・ソングを作るのをやめ、アコギからエレキに持ち替える事になる…のは別の話。

ハッティ・キャロルはキッチンのメイド、

51歳にして10人の子供を産んだ。

皿を運びゴミを外に出し、

そこのテーブルにさえ一回たりとも座る事がない。

テーブルにいる人に会話する事も無く、

ただ食事の終わった皿を片付け、

いっぱいになった灰皿を綺麗にした。

撲殺され、床に伏せて死んだ。

風を切り裂き、部屋を通過して投げられた杖で殺された。

死ぬ運命にあり、優しさは全て壊された。

ハッティ・キャロルはウィリアム・ザンジンガーに何も悪い事はしていないのに。

法廷で、裁判長が小槌を叩いた。

法の下に全ては平等で、法廷は公明正大であると証明した。

法典の紐が引っ張られたり、曲げられたりされる事なく、

そして高貴な身分の者も一度指名手配され、

警察に追われる身となり、逮捕される。

法律のはしごが逆さまにされる事なく、

何の理由もなく人を殺め、

何の警告もなく人を咎めた犯人に対し、

判事はその由緒正しきコートに身を通し、威厳を持ってはっきりと言い渡した。

罪と悔い改めるさせる為に、

ウィリアム・ザンジンガーに6ヶ月の刑が処された。
